Anonymous asked:idk if this has ever happened to you but if you get rejected from a publication with a message along the lines of "this isnt for us but we hope you have luck with other publications" or "we like your style but the piece isnt for us, but please submit something else to us in the future tho" are they just trying to be nice? bc i feel like the 1st one might just be letting me down easy but who solicits another piece from a writer they think sucks? maybe it was just thematically wrong for them idk
This happened to me plenty of time and I’ve done this too and every writer has gone through this
It basically means your piece needs some grammatical editing or the piece needs to be worked over again or it’s a piece they’re not sure will bring them money because it’s either too far out there or it might just sit odd with other pieces that were accepted
Or it could be a blanket message that is sent to everyone that was rejected and could have range of meanings you’ll never know
These messages are sent because publications really do get a high volume of pitches/submissions and a critique worth it’s salt takes time no editor is looking at a piece once and says this is what needs to be done on the spot. If I’ve given a critique/edit of a piece I read it at least 3 times and not all in the same day (this is why the average wait time for an answer can take up to 6 weeks) because we not only have to look over grammar but also, the style, the content, the execution of content, the quality of the beginning and ending, the transitions within the text and for an article we not only look for that but we also have to verify and sources that have been used, made sure the sources are used properly all that is taken into account when giving a decision to accept or decline and having to do that when say you receive 10-100 submissions a day?
This doesn’t mean to stop trying matter of fact it means to keep working and submitting cause if it’s meant to be your work might be accepted
